Despite the continual support for a "Two-State solution" to the Israel-Palestine conflict, the United States has consistently vetoed efforts at full UN recognition in the Security Council, the latest in April, with the US being the sole holdout. The vast majority of UN nations - Slovenia being the 147th out of 193 - now diplomatically recognize Palestine as a sovereign nation, Palestine has been recognized as an "observer" nation since 2012, and its participation was recently upgraded, although it cannot become a full member without Security Council approval.Palestine’s status at the UN explained (UN)

The United States is out of step with the world. The basis for its rejection of Palestine is that it cannot accede to recognition until its borders are recognized by negotiation with Israel. That, of course, is an impossibility, since Israel has been busily settling Palestinian lands since it occupied the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem in the 1967 war, an effort that is being accelerated under the current regime. Until Palestine is given full recognition, any such negotiation is hamstrung by its unequal bargaining position. I'll note here that the US position is at odds with its opposite position in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In order to successfully negotiate a two-state solution, Palestine must be recognized. Then, as a full participant, it can negotiate as an equal. The United States can accomplish this by giving its recognition, and stepping away from its intransigence in the Security Counsel. The problem isn't one of principle, it is one of political expedience.

A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.

Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich
