Steve, As they say, Don't hold your breath : "During his press conference last Wednesday (October 17, 2007) President George Bush drastically altered his Bush doctrine, indicating that now the mere "knowledge" of how to build a nuclear weapon is sufficient provocation for an attack by the United States." You read NEWSHOUNDS? You are way out in Left Field, Joe! Howdy! Also from your link, we find that not only has the Bush Doctrine shifted to allow attacking another coutry for forbidden knowledge, but also for unpleasant ideas: On FOX News Sunday, anchor Chris Wallace started off by asking NPR's Juan Williams why Bush would say that Iran would start WWIII. Williams responded, saying "But the thing is, I think the language also that the President used caught peoples' attention . . . . And as you know, General Petraeus has been saying he wants the ability, if necessary, to cross the border from Iraq into Iran to stop the idea of weapons flowing from Iran into that theater."

Steve,
Uh-uh,IDEAS! Sounds like a job for the "Thought Police!" Left, Right and other points on the political spectrum are becoming increasingly blurred in these fascist times.

Question by Fareed Zakaria ... Stalin, Mao And … Ahmadinejad? Here is the reality. Iran has an economy the size of Finland's and an annual defense budget of around $4.8 billion. It has not invaded a country since the late 18th century. The United States has a GDP that is 68 times larger and defense expenditures that are 110 times greater. Israel and every Arab country (except Syria and Iraq) are quietly or actively allied against Iran. And yet we are to believe that Tehran is about to overturn the international system and replace it with an Islamo-fascist order? What planet are we on? A world turned upside-down?

What planet are we on? We are on a planet where a mainstream news mag can publish an opinion piece by a dark-skinned person with a Middle Eastern sounding name disparaging the Chief Executive in paragraph one for sounding like "some neoconservative crank or sidelined politician looking for publicity". That's what planet we are on.
Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad. Far more people think of "Newsweek" when they think of "news" than of "The National Review".

I don't know about being a crank but he certainly has been a long time supporter of the Iraq invasion. What I found interesting is his view regarding Iran while most writers at WS are promoting the bombing of Iran.

I noticed this as well Joe, the criteria for war was lessened. Rumour has it that it was Israeli bargaining that lowered the bar to simple understanding from concrete evidence.

Wouldn't it actually be better if Iran did have nuclear weapons? It would creat ebalance in the region, forestall our imperilaistic ambitions, and give the regime some assurance that we will not invade them.

Phil, that kind of talk might be construed in some circles as skirting with 'providing aid and comfort', which, under provisions of one or more emergency extra-ordinary secret undisclosed powers of the decider might just land you in a non-existent CIA torture prison and your fungible assets in Dick Cheney's offshore account, or vice versa.
