It was Pres. Reagan with a lot of help and being the right man in the right palce at the right time that brougt about the collapse of the USSR that created the "peace dividend". Without the "peace dividend" the Clinton administration would not have the longest period of peace-time economic expansion to have presided over!

Mikhail Gorbachev "decided" to reform the USSR because of economic pressure Pres. Reagan had been applying to the Soviet economy by blocking US assistance to building an oil pipeline to western Europe from the USSR. Without the hard currency that the oil would bring the Soviet economy HAD to be reformed. It was not Gorbachev's "decision" to reform the Soviet economy because he wanted to. He reformed the Soviet economy because he had to!

Those who are "lucky" are the ones who have done the work to be able to take advantage of a situation when the opportunity presents itself. Reagan wasn't "lucky". He had been fighting against communism for most of his adult life. Read the book REAGAN'S WAR it describes his fight against communism.

Thank G*D for Marshall Reagan! He knew how to use a peacemaker. The guns in his hands are more than likely Colt "Peacemaker" pistols.

Finally, Senator, something that we agree on: Reagan was certainly "able to take advantage of a situation when the opportunity presents itself." While we certainly and vehemently disagree about the honorability and truthfulness of his assertions, he was certainly someone who took advantage whenever an opportunity presented itself, otherwise known as an "opportunist" e.g. "one prone to taking advantage of opportunities as they arise: as a: exploiting opportunities with little regard to principle or consequences."

A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.

Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

Why NW do you look at the taking advantage of opportunities in such a negative light? Taking advantage of an opportunity is not always done "with little regard to principle or consequences." I am quite sure that in your life you have taken advantage of many opportunities, such as furthering your education, without any disregard of principles or consequences.

Reagan's acting ability was irrelevant. What made him a great politician was something else entirely.

Reagan was an extraordinary pitchman, better than even the best soap salesmen. He pitched a soap additive on a B-grade TV western series so well, it helped make the sponsor a corporate powerhouse.

Just by talking, Reagan would make people want to believe him no matter how outrageous his stories and promises were; a near perfect politician.

We were at a state fair, or some roundup type thing out West, and Reagan was there pushing snakeoil or signing autographs or some such. I asked my father who he was. He told me he used to be a bad cowboy actor, and my father loved "hay burners".

Including death valley days

Though a great believer in the prowess, greatness, courage and sagacity of President Ronald Wilson Reagan, I sometimes have trouble reconciling the notion that the president brought down the USSR and not that the USSR inevitably collapsed under the weight of the fatally flawed communist system.

When these conflicting thoughts arise (not being particularly fond of headaches or eggheaded worries), I tend to cleave to the one most efficacious to my point and pretend the other does not exist.
