It can be confusing, Phil. Think of it this way. When one forcibly takes from another in order to give to another, and then claims one is generous -- one is not only a thief, but also a liar. Not so the individual who gives of his own and does so freely and without coercion:-)

It may be confusing to you but not to me. All the philosophical meandering in the world is of interest only to those who like fantasy play. The communist philosophy sounds great until it is tried in a real world situation, as does the "individualist" philosophy.

The problem is that all philosophies have to come down from thought to action through the all too imperfect instrument of human beings, where all fail.

The libertarian-individualist philosophy has never been implemented fully, so it can always be held out as a viable solution. The same could be said of communism, however.

Hope, Phil, it springs eternal. That someday man may overcome his baser instincts and truly strive to do what is right. A dream of Utopia, just a dream, a hope that someday we may achieve through our actions a better way than this. rolleyes There's really a part of me that feels that way, the other part says we're going down for the last time cry

Funny you should mention that, ive been reading some of Iss's links on libertarianism, from a historical sense, seems like the scholastic torchbearers spent as much time if not more castigating marxist scholars that doing anything constructive. is there a pattern here i wonder!

I havent swam too deep in the theory just yet, its economics and i fear i might drown in it, but it does seem to be yet another "bringer of light" philosophy built on an economic basis.

Utopia is ours if only we'd follow the one true way, based on the sacred rite of the transaction.

thats not to say there isnt a fair bit of truth in the concepts and rationale, but economics is only one filter through which to view the world.

i have no doubt that some hold these beliefs true and dear, and work towards the day when it becomes a reality (heavens just over the next hill, boys). Its the fellow travellers that bother me, the ones who will use such a philosophy, or the name, or the cover story to f*ck people over.

you know who they are!

oh and another thing.... these inner fascists that seem to keep cropping up. It seems Isshodos that you think the IF resides in us all. That in fact it is human nature. how then could a pure libertarian ... erm.. society survive when populated by a myriad of goosestepping consciousness.

I promise to read more of those links.

Having lived through both of those extremes myself in a lifetime of work, experimentation and discussion, I have arrived at the point of view that neither is really likely. It seems we are doomed to face life in its ambiguity as a flawed species.

Where Phil and others make their fundamental mistake concerning libertarian thought is to think of it as striving for a utopia. A utopia is dependent upon man constantly exercising his goodness, as well as a belief in the perfectability of man. Neither is necessary for a libertarian-oriented world. Reward and punishment are still motivators, though in a libertarian and free market based environment they will be, for the most part, self-induced.
Yours,
Issodhos

thanks for the specifics, i feel so enlightened.

and this inner angel can only be realised through the power of the one true way eh?

We live in a world with real problems and simply do not have the luxury of waiting for your "free market" solutions to adjust behavior. When a person needs immediate medical care it is no avail that the insurance company that denies them coverage to increase their profit margin might be in competition by another carrier at some future date which agrees to the coverage. That person will be long dead before the "market" works.

Your philosophy is suitable for those with substantial resources, not for 90% of the world's or even the US population. You are a dreamer, and that is not bad, it is just useless.

Phil. I gatta walk out in the middle of the ring here and call BS
Read your own signature line, being a dreamer is useless? What in this world hasn't become a possibility because men dreamed? Are you so cold and hard that to dream is truly useless. Maybe not a bad thing but still a useless thing. Did the founders dream? Was that Useless? I could go on and on believe me I'm capable of going on and on and right now I have plenty of time to type but I think it shouldn't be necessary. Sheesh

Dreaming is a good thing when it leads to useful action. That was my point. Dreaming in itself is of no value to anyone but the dreamer.
