Thank you, Steve, for correcting grasshopper's impression, even if gained from the big "O".
Human Immuniodeficincy virus is just that, a virus. It is opportunistic and at the same time fragile. We had a blowup about AIDS here on the Rant recently which in part involved responsibility regarding the disease.
The only useful conversation for anyone who has this virus or any other disease is one that leads to effective treatment. So it seems to me diverting from that to affixing responsibility, even if it is assigned to religious leaders or others is focusing where it won't make any difference.
I would hope we as a people would ask ourselves, on a day like this whether there is something that I/you could do to make life for those infected with the virus better.
I would hope those of us infected with the virus would look today to what we can do to help others avoid becoming infected.
There are now or will be other new deadly diseases rise up and afflict many. That is the one sure thing.
How we deal with a disease says much about who we are. Advice given is almost never welcomed until asked for, so I give none. All I know is that during my life I have done many things which could have had or did have adverse consequences to myself and others. It is the grace of a higher power that forgives these actions. From such grace I have learned to have compassion for others.

We had a blowup about AIDS here on the Rant recently which in part involved responsibility regarding the disease. HIV is not an opportunistic infection. Opportunistic infections are infections caused by pathogens that usually do not cause disease in a person with a healthy immune system, but can affect people with a poorly functioning or suppressed immune system. These pathogens take this "opportunity" to cause an infection. We had a blowup about AIDS here on the Rant recently which in part involved responsibility regarding the disease. And the fragility of some is reflected in the fact that those participating in the discussion are no longer with us, except for the mod involved, of course!

Thank you, Steve, for correcting grasshopper's impression, even if gained from the big "O". Thank you Phil. Of course I know openly gay African-American men - because they are gay. I also know these same African-American men are very educated about the HIV virus. It is my impression that gayness, in general, is not allowed in the "straight" African-American community. I am not aware of one, single, openly gay African-American man that has infected an African-American woman with the HIV virus. In fact, I've never heard of it. However, I have heard of many "down-low" African American "straight" men (read: sexually repressed, conflicted) that have infected African-American woman - the later a group increasingly becoming infected, unfortunately. One can argue it is for religious factors - that is true - but I will also submit that is has more to do with the culturally hyper-male superiority flaunted in their community - as heard on many rap songs. This is a broad paint brush, but I am also aware of the good guys like Tyler Perry, Will Smith, Denzil Washington's as well who do not fit the stereotype flaunted in rap songs.

So the Senator was correct in that the self loathing gays are responsible for spreading AIDS.

So the Senator was correct in that the self loathing gays are responsible for spreading AIDS. No, the Senator is not correct, because a man who is self-loathing about his sexuality is not gay. Gay men accept their sexuality proudly. Therein lies, the difference. You may be able to blame bisexuals if "blame" wishes to find a home.

Tell that to their wives. What pejorative would "gays" use to identify such men?

As you know, or as you should know, that HIV virus attaches itself to otherwise healthy cells and infects them. There is a six month period in which the virus "sero converts" itself into the immune system, thus destroying it. But, initially, the person infected has a healthy immune system.
