The way I look at it is that the Mormon "Garments" are little different than a devout Muslim wearing a Burka, except that the Mormons hide them and make them a deep dark church secret. I understand that Mormons were persecuted and it seems there are some pretty reasonable reasons for this including, general cultishness, strangeness/weirdism, bigamy, racism and misogyny or at least total male domination. But this misogyny is surely not specific to the Mormons, as it is little different with Catholics, Jews, and Muslims. At least all the orthodox agree on monotheism and the second class citizenship of women. Oh and I left out fundamentalist protestant Christians, silly me!

But getting back to sacramental underwear worn all the time. This is like a stealth Muslim fundamentalist hiding her Burka under her clothing which would be pretty hypocritical, because isn't the whole point to wear your religion on your sleeve so to speak? If you are hiding it, what are you ashamed of?

Romney is the equivalent of a Catholic Bishop running for president, he is not a mere member of the Religion, but a very high ranking official in the Mormon hierarchy.

So is America ready for a Burka wearing President? Even Turkey is not comfortable with it!

How about an Opus Dei Catholic wearing a cilice, the chain with prickly spikes on the upper thigh for at least two hours a day, as was mandated for members until very recently.

People were comfortable with JFK because they knew he was a playboy and didn't take all that Catholic dogma seriously anyway.

Or how about a Baptist Minister Creationist from Arkansas? Haven't we had enough of fundamentalist "Christian" presidents?

Or a Mormon High Priest outfitted in sacred undergarments.

Or a Hasidic Jew in pigtails and big hat.

I would, on religious grounds, vote for Rudy Giuliani because I know he doesn't take any Catholic values seriously, except for its authoritarian stances. I view this hypocrisy as one of his only positive attributes.

I hope that at one of the "debates" in front of a national audience of several thousand, that some brave moderator asks all the candidates to raise their hand if they wear: Boxers, Briefs, or Garments? America wants and needs to know this.

Romney is no JFK, Dowd

“The Mormon approach to family life is amazing, and there are a lot of good things about the faith,” he said. But he worries that “the Mormon Church, while more welcoming, is still not a place that grants women and blacks equal status, and it’s a terrible place to be gay. The leadership is authoritarian, male, white and absolutely intolerant of dissent.”

Mitt did not give a brave speech, but a pandering one. Disguised as a courageous, Kennedyesque statement of principle, the talk was really just an attempt to compete with the evolution-disdaining, religion-baiting Huckabee and get Baptists to concede that Mormons are Christians.

“J.F.K.’s speech was to reassure Americans that he wasn’t a religious fanatic,” Mr. Krakauer agreed. “Mitt’s was to tell evangelical Christians, ‘I’m a religious fanatic just like you.’”

The world is globalizing, nuclear weapons are proliferating, the Middle East is seething, but Republicans are still arguing the Scopes trial.

"Hey, that's not my porthole!"

"That's okay, that's not my cannon either..."

Seriously though, The Latter Day Saints Church has about the same logical connection to mainstream Christianity as Islam does: Both are what the Muslims call "People of the Book" (along with Christians and Jews) who worship the God of Abraham and consider the Old Testament holy. Both recognize Jesus as an important figure in their religion. Both concentrate on a post-Jesus prophet's account of additional messages from God. In fact, both of their respective prophets dictated the passages of their holy message to a scribe.

There's also another interesting similarity: Both of their respective prophets promoted polygamy, both liked 'em young, and both had way more wives than they allowed their followers.
