The Day the Presidency Was Stolen from Al Gore and the American People:
December 12, 2000, and the Supreme Court CoupBuzzFlash on Wed, 12/12/2007 - 4:35am. Analysis A BuzzFlash News Analysis "About 10 p.m. EST on December 12, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in favor of Bush by a 5–4 vote, effectively ending the legal review of the vote count with Bush in the lead. Seven of the nine justices cited differing vote-counting standards from county to county and the lack of a single judicial officer to oversee the recount, both of which, they ruled, violated the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution." The Fateful Moment in the Silent Coup That Stole a Presidency From: Judith E. Schaeffer, Legal Director, People For the American Way Re: Bush v. Gore, the Supreme Court and the 2008 Election Season Seven years ago, the United States Supreme Court issued its 5-4 decision in Bush v. Gore. By stopping the contested vote count in Florida on December 12, 2000, the conservative wing of the Supreme Court effectively gave the presidency to George W. Bush and took the decision away from the voters. Less than one year from now, the voters will decide the future of the Supreme Court. The next appointments to the Court will almost certainly be made by the President elected in November 2008, and confirmed by a Senate with new members elected in the same cycle. It’s crucial that voters understand that their votes will help determine the shape of the Court for many years to come, and the anniversary of Bush v. Gore is a timely opportunity to raise the issue for your readers. more -- http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/analysis/234

This is why, no matter how much Conservatives declare they will "stay home" if they do not like the Social positions of the Republican Presidential nominee (speaking in the "Rudi is a shoe-in phase"), not one of them will. Every Conservative will vote Party Line Republican because they want power, and do not care one bit who is in power to provide it: As long as those Republicans in power do not have a conscience to get in the way of power.
The "Yellow-Dog" Democrats proved that such was not as generally true of Democratic office holders.
The day I see a Republican put his/her loyalty to their country above that of their party will be the day we have at least a shot at getting our coutry back.

As I recall, they did NOT stop the vote count... they simply gave it until later that night to complete, didn't they? Or do I remember that incorrectly?
One thing I've never understood... since they pretty much all agreed that the Florida vote in particular was particularly flawed, why didn't they just not certify the results? Florida could just have re-run the election, or do whatever they deemed necessary. It had happened before, with at least two states I think.

why didn't they just not certify the results? Going back and reviewing the story, from the ever-reliable Wiki: These ultimately resulted in a December 12 7-2 United States Supreme Court decision that the Florida Supreme Court's scheme for recounting ballots was unconstitutional, as well as a 5-4 United States Supreme Court decision that ended the Florida recounts and allowed Florida to certify its vote. The vote was certified by Katherine Harris, the Republican Secretary of State who had been the Florida co-chair of Bush's own campaign. So remember, anyone who claims that Gore won the 2000 election is completely and utterly mistaken. Bush won by a vote of 5-4.
