1. The lack of English spoken. There is no way a person can go through the American educational system and not speak English - with the only exception to this caveat being President George W. Bush - Mr Bush does speak enough English to get by, however.
Legal immigrants learn English pretty much right-away through ESL classes: English as a Second Language as EmmaG has pointed out.
2. Behavior. Standing on the street waiting for work to find you. Legal residence simply go out and look for a job or mail resumes around.
3. Lack of social security card. New borns are required to have one.
1) You cannot tell someone's immigration status by the language they speak. We get a lot of English-speaking illegals as well, for one thing; for another thing, it takes years of study to be anywhere near fluent in English; many people who are here legally do not know English and may not be studying it. This one is off the mark.
2) How you go about getting a job is a reliable indicator of your immigration status? Come on, Rick, that's really poor thinking.
3) Lack of a social security card. If I'm here legally but I don't have a green card, do I get a social security card? If I'm not working and don't intend to work and intend to go back home, do I need a social security card?
