In my experience, people are adept at self serving rationalization. This includes everyone: Liberals, conservatives libertarians, monarchists, communists, Evangelical Christians, Islamists, and people colored black, white, yellow, green and blue.

I dont think the man is a libertarian at all.

He has however used the idealogy and arguments of libertarianism,

He was i believe most vocal about them, and was willing to drop them as soon as the cold economic waters shrivelled his pair.
