For fun because we needed some fun, we ordered and watched Rocky Horror Picture Show tonight.... Nice blast from the past. Cheeky on so many levels. I LOVE the sound track! Susan Sarandon is hot.

Olyve, I'm startin' to wonder about this thing you have for Susan Sarandon...
Ardy, the "movie reputation" thing can backfire, too. I'd heard so many people talk about "Citizen Kane" as though it truly were the third member of the Trinity, that I refused to see it...until last year. Then I immediately bought a copy, and a biography of Welles (or two.) Oh, and saw "The Third Man" -- a movie where I frequently realized - this scene or shot is a horrible cliche - only to realize that I was watching the original.
Sometimes if you butt heads against a reputation for too long, you lose. I could have seen "Kane" ten or fifteen times by now, if I'd started watching in my 20s. Hmmm...maybe I need to pick up some popcorn, disappear for a few hours this Saturday afternoon. I think I'm ready to see it again. Once a year feels about right.
Welles' movies are like his voice - rich.

Oh that sound track. One night my S.O.'s best friend pulled out a copy of the soundtrack that didn't have the words, they both sang along from memory, it was hilarious and frightening at the same time (not quite as frightening as earlier in the evening when we discovered that the Oxygen on Demand channel had Karaoke... 3 guys and 3 girls singing "The Rose" is truly a sight... and sound... to see/hear). And I completely agree, Susan Sarandon is hot Now if anyone wants to see a very odd anti-corporate, anti-establishment romp down the wacky trail, go rent The Magic Christian. Came out around 1969, stars Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr, with appearances by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Richard Attenborough, Christopher Lee (as a vampire), Roman Polanski, Raquel Welch (in a leather outfit wielding a whip), Wilfrid Hyde-White, and Spike Milligan. You might have trouble getting all the way through it sober, but it definitely has it's moments and it is truly truly odd.

I'd heard so many people talk about "Citizen Kane" as though it truly were the third member of the Trinity, that I refused to see it...until last year. Yes, I agree. I know there have been a few times that I have avoided something that seemed too popular, only to find out some time later that it was actually good. I think Sybil was one of those. The whole uproar around the movie and multiple personality phenomena seemed way overblown. I was also a little sceptical about Sally Fields as the star. But then when I finally say the film, I thought it was very well done.

Another "movie reputation backfire" -- not knowing what I wanted to watch for a good New Year's Eve flick, I finally decided to watch "The Three Faces of Eve" again.
Except it turns out I'd never seen it before. I think, if it's in book form, I've read it - but not seen it before tonight. Still getting chills & goosebumps.
I've seen very few Joanne Woodward movies - I doubt there will ever be enough for me -- but I'm always astonished that she never seems to have reached Movie Superstar status. I'd have to do some reading but I think she chose to work in theater more than movies...but damn. There are very, very few who can compare to her -- and she was quite young in this movie.
Always good to start a new year with a sample of excellence.

Just added Magic Christian. Sounds a bit like the original The Seven Deadly Sins--NOT THE 90'S REMAKE. Several of the same cast members, including Rachel Welsh in, if I remember right, black leather.
I always put Joanne Woodward in super star category, being--of course--overshadowed by her husband. Though both of them did Broadway, I think both have more movies than stage. She even directed one movie. In the sixties. Perhaps called Rachel? About a spinster school teacher.
Several years ago I bought a tape of The Long Hot Summer from the early sixties. I really will get around to watching it. Soon.
Great NYC moment: early 70s, I guess. Plaza Suite had just opened, SRO. So I did. At the first intermission word circulated that some REALLY BIG stars were in the audience. Rumor was not yet saying who. At the end of the second intermission I turned around and was face-to-face with Paul Newman. Joanne Woodward was close behind. A few minutes later I did start to breathe again.

It's "Rachel, Rachel" and she starred in it. Looking to add it to my list.
Had I come face-to-face with Paul Newman in the early 1970's it might have taken a lot longer than a few minutes to start breathing again...
I think it's astonishing that two people had such astonishing talent, in the same field, and have been married for so long. Certainly appears to be a one-off, as my Scots acquaintance would say.
