According to IMDB, yes, he directed and she starred. But Netflix doesn't seem to have it! Grrr.

Phil, I finally got around to renting "Brokeback Mountain" -- but I have to tell you, I only made it through the first hour.

It's pretty, and the acting is good, but I have exactly the problem with it that I expected to have: I have spent too much time in the rural West and Midwest to have any tolerance for...cowboys.

That's not completely true; I could probably watch "The Magnificent Seven" three times through, and "Outlaw Josey Wales" too, and some others as well. But late 20th-century cowboys? Can't do it.

It didn't help that I read the original short story years ago and thought it was about the right length & pace...this was just way too slow. And those characters - I just wanted to slap them both. Have sex with whoever you like, but for God's sake quit mumbling, and drop that rodeo swagger while you're at it.

Part of my problem too, might have been the fact that a gay cowboy is not a surprising concept to me. I always figured a larger-than-usual percentage of the cowboy/goatroper population was gay; they spend WAY too much time trying to impress other cowboys.

It's a pretty movie, yes. But cowboys...ugh.

Oh, well...I tried.

Julia, I can appreciate what you say. Of course from my perspective I just wanted them to "get it on"

I might have liked it better if there had been less scenery and shuffling, and more sex! <grin>

Julia, many in the gay community thought the film wqas really a "chick flick" written by and for women. If it had been a gay author I can guarantee it would have been very different.

Interesting.
Hmmmm....I guess it was a chick flick at that.
I did like the movie but my response was great sadness.

Here are some of the more highly rated movies on pay per view OnDemand on Comcast. I assume that similar pay services on other cable services have the same movies. The percentages are the numbers of media reviews that were positive. All are available on DVD:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/fracture/ 71%

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/joe_strummer_the_future_is_unwritten/ 86%

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/knocked_up/ 90%

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_lives_of_others/ 94%

We saw the well reviewed Stephen King horror flick 1408 with John Cusack (on screen for 98% of the movie) last night. Little gore but lots of terror and scares.

We also saw Hot Fuzz, hilarious... and 89% good reviews which you can read here. .

and

Blades of Glory, also hilarious

By the way Netflix is trying to stay in step with changing viewing trends (read article) by working with LG to offer a set top box so customers can instantly download movies instead of getting DVDs in the mail.

Oh well. I do highly recommend Annie Proulx's short story, though.

Maybe it's just that I don't have a romantic bone in my body.
