"...You get John McCain in the White House, and I do believe we will be at war with Iran."
- Pat Buchanan

You've probably heard by now that McCain won the Florida primary. I don't believe that there was ever any question that he wouldn't. Even the neo-cons realized that their choice Giuliani wasn't a viable national candidate so McCain suddenly emerges from the back of the pack as the leader. Do you think that there's any chance that McCain will ask Giuliani to be his running mate? Peggy Noonan correctly wrote that Bush killed the Republican party. A McCain/Giuliani ticket will be the last nail in the Republicans'coffin and insure Hillary's victory.

A McCain/Giuliani ticket will never happen. The social conservatives and the religious right would have a fit of apoplexy if it's even hinted at.

No doubt the Religious Right is already having fits of apoplexy, Larry. I mean, who do they have up there championing their causes? Neither Sen. McCain nor former Gov. Romney is anything close to a "values" candidate. Heck, Romney doesn't even pretend to be a Christian, and McCain's "family background" is spotty to say the least. I won't go to "stained", but definitely spotty.

Their man Thompson has already dropped out, and the Great White Hope from Arkansas appears to be languishing in an Edwards-like position now that his "surge" has subsided.

Who's left for the Radical Right?

I'm thinking Huckabee is hanging in there for a VP bid. Romney or McCain could use him to "balance" the ticket and try to hang on to the few remaining Religious Right voters who will even bother to show up on election day.

Larry,

Don't count on it. If a McCain/Giuliani ticket ever takes the White House, they'd have to rename the War Room the Rubber Room. McCain makes Hillary look normal. The only republican ticket balancing act is geographical, i.e, east and west of the Hudson. Giuliani is east and McCain is the rest of the country. About the only values the republicans (with the exception of Ron Paul) appear concerned with is endless war mongering, which is probably part of their economic platform as well. Faux News and the neo-cons want Giuliani, but they realize that he's unelectable, so they pull a McCain out of their hat or someplace else. In the unlikely event that they get elected, Giuliani is next in line to the throne if the elderly McCain should pop a cork while in office.

I wonder if those "accidental" cuttings of the four undersea fiber optic cables that provide Internet service to much of Asia and the Middle East might have something to do with that? Nah...never could happen, right? ;-)

Huckabee is not going anywhere but back to Arkansas. No reasonable candidate would want him anywhere near the ticket.

The RR will have no choice other than to stay home or to vote for (the current presumptive nominee) McCain.

Snargle,

You are a suspicious and cynical rapscallion, but I'm asking myself the same question. One such "accident" may be possible even though this isn't quite the same thing as a backhoe cutting a gass line or buried telephone line. Two such "accidents" in the same region? I'd like to see the odds in Vegas on that, although stuff happens if you're fishing with a grappling hook.
