I very much like Europe and one of the things I very much like about it is that most conveniences are very accessible. It's nice to have things so close. When they aren't close there are usually excellent transportation systems available.

allow me to clarify Irelands position a bit.

Planning is pretty poor here too, developers run the show, only recently have various instruments been put in place for new development infrastructure and "whole town planning" rather than just isolated settlements with no facilities. we have some horr stories of areas in Dublin. nothing but houses for miles, few facilites. awful places, slowly improving though.

and as for transport. We built a light rail system, a modest one of two lines. and they dont even f-ing MEET. one strategically placed broken down car is enough to gridlock a quarter of the city.

we have the fortune not to be bombed heavily in WW2 so there was no need to plan any rebuild.

Used to be anyone visiting Dublin could easily show you where Dublin ends and Dun Laoghaire begins. Now it looks all connected as one big metropolis. Soon Malahide Castle will be in the middle of a shopping complex. That's, er, um, you know progress. The Celtic Tiger is real and it does many wonderful things but tiger's also don't care about where they sh*t. I'm hoping you all do better with progress than we have.

I've been on the DART many times. I never knew the two lines didn't meet.

I'm so glad to have visited Dublin in the 1970's. I won't go back now.

Actually, it is the government way, california rick. Government is the generator of the numbers published monthly. And Food and Gas are included in the CPI. They are not included in calculating the inflation rate (referred to by the Federal Reserve as the "core inflation" rate.

Unfortunately, some reporters tend to not have a clue concerning the subjects they report on, and they often substitute or allow a pol or other liar to substitute CPI for the inflation rate. The two are not directly related nor are they interchangable.

nah mate its the new light rail system - the luas, additional to the dart. the new lines dont connect and one of the new lines doesnt connect to the dart.

f-ing marvellous. after spending years ripping up the city to build the new luas theyre now doing it again to build connectors.

Luas, I don't know about. I was just there last year. Maybe I didn't see it because there are so many people in Dublin now. It was dark with people. I do remember construction on O'Connell but I didn't pay much attention to it. Maybe that was it.

It's difficult for Americans in Europe these days. We can't really pay much attention to the surroundings when we are there what with us having to beg for spare change so that we might buy chips and a pint for the equivalent of $15.00 or so.

I have a distaste for those reporters who are slothful and unthinking. That does not cover all reporters -- hence my use of "some" as a caveat.;-)

But most. Certainly most.

No distaste for journalists. It's a job - some are better at their job than others.
