I have a name that many small-minded people assume means I am Jewish. Had it all my life. And I practiced law for a while in South Carolina. In the 1990's. Saw the fear in black American's faces when confronted by "justice". Knew several incredible older black men who had practiced law in the 50's and 60's and had to hide in car trunks to get in and out of town when appearing in court on behalf of their clients.
To see so learned a man as Senator Obama trying so hard to get us all to see the pain these hatreds cause was wrenching. To see the hatred being turned against him as pretext for taking him down in the primaries of his own party is as disillusioning as the assassinations of '63 and '68. Or the cynical arrogance of our Vietnam policy. Or these damnable violations of human decency in the Middle East.
