I have a good friend who told me she paid a very high price for being "high yellow." It's an extremely ugly term, offensive to many, and one I hope is never revived.

yellow may be more common, though. i have heard it used in both a descriptive and derisive manner by black people. there are other terms such as "red bone" and some others i cannot recall at that moment that relate to skin tones.

I've heard the term many times throughout my life. I really haven't heard it used near as much in recent years, but like you Julia...I hope it's popularity isn't resurrected.

Being of partial Asian descent, "yellow" is a term I look upon with distaste. "Yellow Horde" and "Yellow Menace" are still common in some parts of the west coast. I much prefer the term "Human".

I had no idea that people would find this historical term troubling. There is no racism in America (except reverse racism, of course), those days are over. I was only offering it as a word-of-the-day for educational purposes. We should know our History, as well as our vocabulary, in order to understand how far we have come as a society.

I've never, ever heard the term until this thread. Rick, you've led a very, very sheltered life, and I hope you never have an opportunity to hear of other such racial epithets. I believe you said something somewhere about having been a native Californian - born and grew up there - so it's not surprising as the term largely has association with southern racial attitudes.
