Screw redusing the price of oil short term pain for long term gain Mercedes recently rolled out some extraordinary news, announcing that it intends to transition its entire lineup of luxury automobiles to alternative fuels by 2015. The development underscores an industry trend of major auto manufacturers pushing the alternative energy envelope, and we’re excited to see Mercedes mobilize its cache of high class-cred in such a dedicated step towards sustainable transportation.

LOL exactly
Europe got it, but then again they have been paying these prices for sometime. There is a reason though that smart cars are so poupular. Us on the other hand...decide the hummer was a practical everyday ride. Well, shame on "us". Just curious -- how many Hummers (the original really big, ugly ones) were sold and what percentage of the gasoline sold goes into powering them? Or is it not really anything to get overly work up about, other than as a symbolic, though meaningless target? Yours, Issodhos

Clearly, Iss, you do not live in Los Angeles, where I am sure all but a small handful of the Hummers were sold. I don't know about how much gas they consume, but they sure as hell are hard to see around.

Where I live, I have seen two that appear to be locally owned. population approximately 120,000 (city and county). So, aside from the fact that it is so easy to make fun of the numb nuts that buy the silly things, why target such a small number for demonization? It does get tedious, doesn't it? Isn't Los Angeles/Beverly Hills known for the home of the rich and elite? One of the first civilian owners of a Hummer was Arnold Schwarzenegger, which naturally also gave the vehicle additional publicity. Free Republic.com Arnold at one time owned a fleet of seven Hummers!! I've even seen Humvee stretch limos cruising around Los Angeles/Beverly Hills. Hip-hop moguls and movie stars gave the Hummer the street cred it never deserved. great cars.com 'Stars' who own Humvee / Hummers (Now why is Gary Coleman on the list of 'stars' that own Humvee / Hummers - can he even see over the top of the steering wheel? )

Catch up, guys - there's a Hummer dealership in Omaha, and I've seen several of the damn things in town.
It's not just the rich and famous - sometimes it's just the rich and stupid.
Also: someone asked why more people aren't buying hybrids. For me, it IS simple economics. I've never paid over $17K for a car. Last time I needed to buy one, hybrids were 25-30K. Also, the Prius was just coming out, was almost unavailable, and reliability wasn't a known factor.
I love the idea of hybrids - and my next car will surely be one (unless other, better technologies are available) - but I'm still paying for the very small car I bought (one of those no-interest, no-down sales.) My current car has several more years of use coming...particularly if I find a reliable alternative fuel & a way to use it (read: biofuel/reused vegetable oil type things.)

Issodhos BY all means, we should be more inclusive and add the Cadillac Escalade, The Lincoln Navigator, an all those pick up trucks that have the ENORMOUS wheels And while we are at it, I understand the Rolls Royce and Ferrari get atrocious mileage as well

lets see now 20-30 mpg hummers and other large vehicles, forcing up the price of gas and oil?
demonising the people who through their selfish choices have directly affected my life? Demonising the companies that provided and heavily promoted this "choice", Demonising such inefficient monstrosities as Hummers?
youre damn right.
In part they're slowly taking away my right to travel freely.

...demonising the people who through their selfish choices have directly affected my life? ...not really a 'selfish' choice - more of a phenomena of over-compensating - small penis/male insecurity syndrome - at least in Arnold's case (...once the proud owner of a fleet of seven Hummers), we can blame the small testies on steroid abuse.

Forget the Hummer, what we all need is a BMW M6. One has a choice of coupe or sedan. This fine auto has a V-10 engine producing 500hp. Can you imagine the neck snapping acceleration and braking going from 0 to 5 mph back to 0 while stuck in rush hour traffic in a place like LA? And they claim it gets 17 mpg highway! If you can actually get it up to highway speed that is. But the feature I really like is the automatic wipers. When the windshield senses rain drops, the wipers will turn on automatically. Forget having to actually see drops on the windshield and then turn a switch. What will they think of next!? Oh—and all of this can be yours for just over 100k. Sweet! http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Vehicles/2008/M/M6Coupe/default.aspx
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.
