Guys, what the hell are you talking about? What's it got to do with the decline of resources here in the US? There have been some awfully unpleasant results worldwide of Modern Corporate Farming Practices interrupting the food chain in countries that really can't afford to play the corporate games. I'd much rather see Mexican farmers growing corn for a profit in Mexico so they don't have to sneak up here and pick beans and peppers and take jobs away from Americans and eat our food and stuff. You have a good point Roger and Nafta Kinda sucks in some ways I honestly believe though that intelligent leadership might find ways to correct these flaws.
America herself is running out of a lot of things. She may have to occasionally work hand in hand with Mexico and Canada during these strange times ahead. Green industry and resource management, conservation if you will, are going to become mighty important industries in the very very near future.

Per the CIA Fact Book:

  • Denmark: 1.75 fertility rate
  • Japan: 1.22 fertility rate
  • China: 1.77 fertility rate

The U.S.'s fertility rate is too high, IMHO.

Rick,

The replacement fertility rate is 2.1 so the US has a rate that will just maintain the population not grow it. The growth comes from legal and illegal immigrants.

For more info on the rates go to List_of_countries_and_territories_by_fertility_rate

And so we should build huge walls and proclaim ourselves free free free from any interdependence among the rest of the world. We shall never travel abroad nor allow anyone to enter our mighty realm! We will just send soldiers out to take whatever we need.
That aint resource management. people are resources too.
Unless you are a Native American you are related to immigrants.
Probably legal and illegal. Try to work your way through that. A border is nought but a line in the sand if there is water on one side but not the other then people will cross it. Or die trying.

Rick are you still single? Are you lobbying for a gayer America just so there will be a larger dating pool?

I am an immigrant myself. I was born in Romania and come to US legally in 1994 so maybe I'm adding to the "problem" that Rick has with the population in the US.

Rick, just face it. Illegal immigrants come to US to do jobs that mostly US citizens do not want to do. Show me how many people would move from cities to rural areas and work 12 hours a day for minimum wage (if that is even offered) to pick vegetables or fruits?

I have yet to see an illegal immigrant take my job working in a bank (although it might be resourced to India grin)

I understand that the currant rate will keep the population constant, but given the limited resources in the future, we need to cut our population.

Don't forget the .1 in the 2.1 of fertility for the U.S. - that .1 adds up over time.

I think that Japan is doing a good job at sensible population growth.

Yes; no.

I've been an advocate of a lesser population for some time now for the simple reason that resources are limited. I'm also an advocate of smart land-use and urban limit lines and open space which stop the encroachment of mega-cities into open areas. I cite the Los Angeles-San Diego corridor of Southern California as a mega-city encroachment into open spaces due to over population.

Absolutely. Plus, I've never liked kids anyway - time consuming and bothersome.
