I thought Republicans were for cutting taxes. SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday proposed $4.4 billion in new taxes and a similar amount in spending cuts to deal with California's worsening fiscal crisis, saying, "We must stop the bleeding."
Much of the new revenue would come from a 1.5-percentage-point increase in the sales tax; the Republican governor described the hike as temporary but did not say how long it would last. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27577250/How about this for a plan. Cut all spending until you can balance your budget. I'm not for paying higher taxes for the same benefits. If the government will give me more benefits like universal healthcare then I'll be inclined to pay more. And Schwarzenegger... how about legalizing pot??? It would ceate thousands of jobs, clear the prisons of some inmates and tax it as much as ciggaretes. That will close the budget deficit.

I've always thought the government was missing out on a lot of revenue there.........I'd rather keep it illegal, it makes it more fun. Forbidden fruit and all y'know. The price of the Kripto would be greatly affected by taxation. Dirt weed wouldn't change much. Or so I've heard...........

There are so many places that could grow it in California alone (and it is already being grown in NorCal). The market would get flooded with so much product initially that pot would be a lot cheaper than cigs but that wouldn't last too long.

This is what California should be doing. PHILADELPHIA - The city will close libraries and swimming pools, suspend planned tax reductions, cut more than 800 jobs and trim salaries for some administrators in order to weather "an economic storm" that could leave the city with a $1 billion shortfall, Mayor Michael Nutter said Thursday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27577140/Might not be a popular move but costs need to be cut. Period.

Tax it more than cigarettes. And sell licenses allowing individuals to grow a certain amount for personal consumption. That'll pi$$ off the Mafia!

Kap those cuts are already done and much much more. The approved budget cut $10billion but now anohter $10b needs to be found. You can only cut so much and then things start to cost more.
The Calif GOP has refused any tax cuts for decades as their political ploy. Well, that may sound good, but it has actually led to a crisis. they were fine cutting all taxes on luxury yachts and other high earner issues, but have refused to raise some modest tax increases.
The Governor is risking his political life with this move. It is all that is left.

I'm fine with closing most if not all libraries, pools, other non-essential government operated institutions until the budget is back on track. Make government workers only work 4 days a week. Sure, some wait times will increase but those government workers could stand to work a bit faster anyway. I swear that people at my post office and DMV are the slowest workers found in the whole country.

Well youi may be fine with that Kap, but I am fine with raising taxes back to where they were before the GOP ruined our state. Reinstate car tax, raise income taxes back to where they were, remove luxury loopholes, reduce government subsidies to the rich and corporations and we will be fine with a surplus.

Raise taxes a bit, legalize pot, close down some services, but NOT the libraries. Libraries may be old fashioned, but they are still one of the best ways to encourage literacy, which we desperately need.

And the libraries are sometimes the only place some kids can do research for homework-not every family has a computer, or even friends with computers.
