I liked the photos, Phil. Nice turn out!
Wow, Greger. That's a beautiful picture. I didn't know it was so big. I love birds and have turned into a real bird nerd in recent years. I don't know enough about that many yet though. Thanks.

Olyve if you don't already have it you should get a Sibley Field Guide or some other book of eastern birds and begin keeping a life list. Guides with illustrations are far superior to guides with photographs for actual identification purposes. The Audubon Books are packed with information but the photographs are near impossible to use for identification.

"Did you cast a ballot or a stone?" My favorite so far of the Prop 8 signs I've seen.

Guides with illustrations are far superior to guides with photographs for actual identification purposes. The Audubon Books are packed with information but the photographs are near impossible to use for identification. The book I've got is Birds of North America. It says on it "approved by the American Bird Conservancy". I has pretty good for what I see on my back porch. I will look for the book you recommend though too. I get a lot of wrens and sparrows. Mockingbirds and a family of cardinals have taken up with me. An occasional woodpecker and I mustn't forget my towhees. By far what I get the most of though is doves. I've got robins in the front but they haven't discovered my back feeders. Once (gasp) I had a black bird show up. And there is a pesky squirrel that tries to disrupt things but I've got a heavy duty bird feeder that it can't mess with too much anymore. All of my birds are fairly friendly now and sometimes don't even fly away when I come out. All except for the wood pecker. He's skittery. Oh and I get hummingbirds too.
