I wasn't around yesterday, but saw that Dostoevsky was mentioned... Regarding his death sentence being commuted, I learned in my CompLit Dostoevsky class in college that the Czar had the guards wait until he was in front of the firing squad to tell him that his sentence was to be commuted- to teach him a lesson. Well, apparently the lesson learned lead to some of the greatest works of literture, IMHO.
