NW, I understand your 3 points... but I have to ask: Why save the big 3 when you can have THE BIG ONE (Ford since it's doing the best out of the 3) survive and let the other 2 companies follow thier failed path?

Demand for cars in general is going down. You have seen the numbers. Demand is 60% of what it was last year and it will continue to decrease.

Bankrupky does spell doom for a car company because nobody will buy a car from such a company... thus liquidation is necessary. But think of how much Ford would benefit from being the lone american car maker. I can see the ads now.

I can also appreciate the impact of monopoly power. Three is better than two or one when it comes to protecting the government's interests, as well as the consuming public's.

Corporations are bigger than governments... at least in the industrial countries. The examples where the government tell a company how to operate are a lot fewer than the examples where a big company tells the government how to write the rules.

I heard that Big 3 assembly line folks make $66.00/hr (including benies).

That's outrageous for a blue collar job! Meat cutters max out at $22.00/hr.

Issodhos I thought I was very clear in referring to "American cars" as such but I was in fact referring to American Owned Auto Manufacturers or specifically the "BIG3" (which is a possible misnomer) I very specifically did not refer to Toyotas as "Foreign" cars but for clarification will in the future refer to them as Foreign Owned Auto Manufacturers Who Use American Labor for Final Assembly. It isn't Labor that is asking for help or Toyota or Nissan, their corporate jets weren't the ones flocking to the government teat. I will humbly submit that they should approach their own governments for bailouts and if their employees and workforce are Union members and have complaints they should take it to their unions.

I'm pretty sure we just went over this.......Actual wages run something like $26-$28 an hour for autoworkers and the two tier wage system is taking on all new hires at greatly reduced wages.
Less in fact than meatcutters are making.
