WASHINGTON - Massive deficits could force the post office to cut out one day of mail delivery per week, the postmaster general told Congress on Wednesday.
Postmaster General John E. Potter asked lawmakers to lift the requirement that the agency deliver mail six days a week.
Faced with dwindling mail volume and rising costs, the post office was $2.8 billion in the red last year and, “if current trends continue, we could experience a net loss of $6 billion or more this fiscal year,” Potter said in testimony for a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28897426/I guess some government do have their brains and are actually working on reducting the debt they are in. IMO, Saturday delivery should be cut ASAP especially with the huge drop in number of mail sent through the USPS.

Debt may also do what Al Qaeda hasn't been able to do - bring down this nation. All it took was massive spending in Iraq fighting a non-existent enemy. Bin Laden is probably smiling - see how cheap and easy it was to goad the U.S. into spending itself into bankruptcy?
Critical thinking - our other national deficit.

Even if the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan end today and that money could be routed back to helping our country it doesn't change the fact that the USPS operates at a loss each day and that more and more people are not using it anymore for bills, cards and other things like packages.
USPS was losing money even during the economic boom and once things slowed down and the "mailers" droped in number significantly it is forcing the top brass to take a look at it.
