"because Thomas is conservative" ... it's not just he is conservative ... he is one of the leaders of the right wing cultural war against Americans Same difference, no?  I may be wrong but I think it's a creative way that rporter is actually saying that Thomas is enjoying his ability to cram a minority view down the throats of a majority. It must feel like being a "strongman" to him. In other words, it must feel like a heady rush.
