E. Jean Carroll is an American journalist, author, and advice columnist. Her "Ask E. Jean" column appeared in Elle magazine from 1993 through 2019, becoming one of the longest-running advice columns in American publishing.

Ms. Carroll has stated that Donald Trump had sexually assaulted her in late 1995 or early 1996 in the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City. Ms. Carroll said that on her way out of the store she ran into Trump and he asked for help buying a gift for a woman. After suggesting a handbag or a hat, the two allegedly moved on to the lingerie section and joked about the other trying some on. Carroll said they ended up in a dressing room together, the door of which was shut, and Trump forcefully kissed her, pulled down her tights and raped her before she was able to escape.

In November 2019, Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit with the New York Supreme Court. The suit states that Trump had damaged her reputation, substantially harmed her professionally, and caused emotional pain. Carroll stated "Decades ago, the now President of the United States raped me. When I had the courage to speak out about the attack, he defamed my character, accused me of lying for personal gain, even insulted my appearance." She stated that she was "filing this (lawsuit) on behalf of every woman who has ever been harassed, assaulted, silenced, or spoken up only to be shamed, fired, ridiculed and belittled."

In September 2020, government lawyers from the Department of Justice (DOJ) asserted that Trump had acted in his official capacity while responding to Carroll's accusation; they asserted that the Federal Tort Claims Act[a] grants their department the right to take the case from Trump's private lawyers and move it to federal court.

This would end the lawsuit, as the government cannot be sued for defamation.

On November 24, 2022, Carroll sued Trump for battery in New York under the Adult Survivors Act, a law passed the previous May which briefly allows sexual assault victims to file civil suits regardless of expired statutes of limitations. Carroll made a renewed claim of defamation, citing statements Trump made in October 2021. In February 2023, Trial judge Kaplan scheduled the trial date for April 25, 2023.

The trial proceeded along all last week. Donald Trump choose to visit his golf courses in Scotland and Ireland instead of defending himself in court. An Irish reporter asked Trump on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 why he was in Ireland instead of NYC defending himself against the allegation of rape. The next day, claimed he is cutting short his trip to Ireland to “confront” E Jean Carroll after his defence team suffered a series of setbacks at his civil rape and defamation trial in New York.

Also while the trial has been going on, Trump has been posting to his Truth Social account that E. Jean Carroll is a liar, that she is ugly, that she is mentally ill. Trump has constantly said that E. Jean Carroll is "not his type." (As if there is a type that Trump would rape.) Trump has also written about the judge in this case, stating that Judge Kaplin was "extremely hostile” to him and calling the Manhattan trial a "disgrace."

During Trump's deposition last fall 2022 for this case, Trump confused a picture of E. Jean Carroll from the 1990s with his ex-wife Marla Maples.

Speaking to reporters while golfing at his Doonbeg resort on Thursday, Trump said he would “probably attend” the trial, which is hearing its final day of evidence before closing arguments next week. This is after weeks of the judge asking Trump's lawyer Joe Tacopina if Trump was going to attend the trial. The answer from Tacopina was "no, he is not."

Now the judge is bending himself backwards to accommodate Trump to speak and has ordered Trump and his lawyer to notify him by 5pm EDT SU 05/07/23 if Trump will speak.

This is where the trail is today.

Closing arguments were scheduled for MO 05/08/23. Accomodating Trump at the last minute is another example of Justice bending over backwards for Trump to make sure he is treated fairly. No other American would be afforded such accommodations as Trump has by various courts since he left office in January 2021.

Big, fat, liar Donald Trump took to his lame and failing social network, Truth Social, this morning claiming falsely that he was denied speaking in his defense at the E. Jean Carroll trial.

That guy is a pathological lying sociopath. mad

Jury rejects claim of rape against Trump, awards accuser $2M

Too bad MAGA continues to and expands their embrace of Trump. Trump is being persecuted just as Jesus was (even though Trump is not Jesus). Thus may actually provide a bump in polling for Trump.

These are not ordinary times and at no point should one try to analyze or process events as if they were. We are in a new era ... the dawn of the last breathes of Democracy ... if people allow it to happen

Absolutely. And not enough are paying close enough attention to stop it from happening.

Agreed. Most people have no idea who Kevin McCarthy even is.

Interesting, most people have no idea who Kevin McCarthy is. That seems especially true when it comes to independents. If one looks at the Don’t Know answer in the question of favorable/unfavorable, don’t know usually means they haven’t heard enough to make up their minds about the individual or never heard of them. Here’s a list on how independents view the major politicians. Independents only. Favorable/unfavorable/don’t know. Independents are important as they make up 44% of the electorate according to Gallup.

Biden 37% favorable/53% unfavorable/10% don’t know.
Harris 31% favorable/51% unfavorable/15% don’t know.
Trump 39% favorable/51% unfavorable/10% don’t know
McCarthy 29% favorable/39% unfavorable 33% don’t know – a third of all independents either haven’t heard enough about this guy or don’t know who the heck he is.
McConnell 22% favorable/54% unfavorable/24% don’t know
Schumer 27% favorable/44% unfavorable/29% don’t know
And the winner is: Hakeem Jeffries 24% favorable/30% unfavorable/47% don’t know.

You can go to Questions 49A-G for the whole scoop on the favorable/unfavorable ratings.

https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/nujlm70ly6/econTabReport.pdf

And to questions 50 A and B for this: How independents view the two major parties.
Democratic Party 31% favorable/50% unfavorable/19% don’t know
Republican Party 30% favorable/51% unfavorable/19% don’t know

The above are independents only, the election deciders as both major party’s bases are relatively even. Gallup placing the Republican Party base at 27%, the Democratic Party base at 28%, independents at 44%.

I realize most of you don’t give an owl’s hoot about independents who are the election deciders or how America thinks, feels as a whole, all of America. I’m interested in how elections turn out, independents are the big IF. I know how Republicans and Democrats will vote, they’re boring. Now independents, fascinating. So take the above with a grain of salt, but the above certainly shows McCarthy isn’t well known if they know who he is by independents or for all American voters either

Putting this thread space back onto the topic of E. Jean Carroll...

It's been four days since a jury in New York found Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation of E. Jean Carroll. In that time, the former president's allies have contorted themselves into pretzels to spin this as a win because there was no finding of liability on the rape count.

Trump had been losing his sh!t in multiple-post tirades that only ended when CNN allowed him to drop his drawers and take a dump onstage for his adoring fans - which is not the behavior of someone who is laboring under the impression that he actually "won" the case, even partially.

[Linked Image from uploads.disquscdn.com]

...as if to confirm that he actually lost, Trump immediately appealed all of the entire jury verdict, which is not something you tend to do if you think you won.

Then again, that is the thinking and logic of someone who truly is really dumb and stupid, incompetent, and a criminal. Doesn't say much for those who support this orange clown, does it? Birds of a feather...
The funniest thing is that Trump immediately defamed Carroll again after the verdict. Carroll's original case trial is coming up, and her lawyer is filing yet another for his recent public comments. I suspect trials 2 and 3 just might use escalating punitive damages, since 5 million doesn't seem to do the trick.

As P_I_A stated above, Trump continues to defame E. Jean Carroll.

During Trump's recent infamous "CNN Town Hall," Trump called Carroll a “wack job,” claimed the trial was “a rigged deal,” as well as asking the laughing pro-Trump audience, "What kind of a woman meets somebody, and brings them up, and within minutes you're playing hanky panky in a dressing room?"

In an interview with Dahlia Lithwick, Carroll's attorney stated, "duly noted" when asked about Trump's comments.

Quote
"He basically repeated the defamation in ways that make it very easy for us to not have to prove a future case on the merits, because we’re gonna get what’s called collateral estoppel or issue preclusion. So that wasn’t maybe wisest thing for him to do."

- Roberta Kaplan, attorney for E. Jean Carroll

Kaplan states that Trump is on the clock to pay the $5 million that jury ordered him to cough up and with interest at 9%, starting from the day of the judgement.

Hell, I could almost live on the interest!
Carroll is asking the judge to increase the $5M since Trump keeps on defaming her.

On Friday, March 8, 2024, Trump posted a $91.2m bond secured by the Chubb Group - an insurance conglomerate based in Switzerland. Judge Kaplin gave E Jean Carroll until 11:00 MO 03/11 to deny the bond. At Trump's rally in Georgia on SA 03/09, Trump repeated the very same lies that got him into trouble to being with.

Switzerland has very strict privacy laws. This bond comes after Hungary's leader Viktor Orbán visit to Mara-largo last week.. Viktor Orbán also has close ties to Vlad Putin. Many are concerned Trump will owe certain world leaders favors if he were to be elected again.

That orange clown just does not know when to keep his big, FAT, mouth shut. I hope that E Jean Carroll denies the bond and asks the Judge to increase the penalty even more.
