Welcome to a fresh week of Round Table discussion for

• July 10th 1925, In Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called "Monkey Trial" begins with John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law.
The law, which had been passed in March, made it a misdemeanor punishable by fine to "teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals." With local businessman George Rappalyea, Scopes had conspired to get charged with this violation, and after his arrest the pair enlisted the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to organize a defense. Hearing of this coordinated attack on Christian fundamentalism, William Jennings Bryan, the three-time Democratic presidential candidate and a fundamentalist hero, volunteered to assist the prosecution. Soon after, the great attorney Clarence Darrow agreed to join the ACLU in the defense, and the stage was set for one of the most famous trials in U.S. history.
• In a duel held in Weehawken, New Jersey, Vice President Aaron Burr fatally shoots his long-time political antagonist Alexander Hamilton on this day, July 11th, 1804. Hamilton, a leading Federalist and the chief architect of America's political economy, died the following day.
• On this day in 1984, Walter Mondale, the leading Democratic presidential candidate, announces that he has chosen Representative Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate. Ferraro, a daughter of Italian immigrants, had previously gained notoriety as a vocal advocate of women's rights in Congress, and the day was July 12th.
• On July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. Continued at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and at other arenas around the world, the 16-hour "superconcert" was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations. In a triumph of technology and good will, the event raised more than $125 million in famine relief for Africa.
• Parisian revolutionaries and mutinous troops storm and dismantle the Bastille, a royal fortress that had come to symbolize the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs. This dramatic action signaled the beginning of the French Revolution, a decade of political turmoil and terror in which King Louis XVI was overthrown and tens of thousands of people, including the king and his wife Marie Antoinette, were executed, on this day, July 14th, 1789.
• July 15th 1971, during a live television and radio broadcast, President Richard Nixon stuns the nation by announcing that he will visit communist China the following year. The statement marked a dramatic turning point in U.S.-China relations, as well as a major shift in American foreign policy.
• On this day, July 16th in 1945, at 5:29:45 a.m., the Manhattan Project comes to an explosive end as the first atom bomb is successfully tested in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

My father in law died, and it's been a rough month. But I'm back. Ozy~I am so sorry. I know that he was very ill.You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Phil, you'll be pleased to know that I paid $3.95 in CA sales tax on an internet purchase yesterday.  Drat it all!  ...on the plus side, I got free shipping and saved 15% by searching for an online coupon. My net savings was about $5.50 after paying tax.

Rick, I made an internet purchase yesterday and did not pay sales tax! A three loaf perforated baguette pan. I'm so tired of flat bottoms. 6 pounds of Italian-style tipo 00 flour for pizza dough. Jamie Oliver's pizza dough recipe is fantastic done with regular bread flour, the tipo 00 flour should take it over the top and make it as good as any pizzeria. Also 2 ounces of Vietnamese Cinnamon! For only $4.95! The best Cinnamon in the world. Shipping on this 8 lb order was only $12. Thanks Scoutgal for making me aware of King Arthur Flour's internet store!
