I'm more moved for Memorial Day today than I have been for years. In part, it is because of the heroes on the Portland train who stepped in to protect two teenagers who were being accosted by a white supremacist and were brutally murdered. Teen on Portland train: 'They lost their lives because of me and my friend'. They exhibited what it is to be the best of Americans: standing up to hate on behalf of those who cannot protect themselves. That, really, is what the military has meant to me. Standing up for American values on behalf of any and all of our citizens. It has me thinking about friends who were killed overseas, and my father who was a WWII veteran of the Pacific campaign. What ties all of these together is the spirit of help for fellow human beings. I think about the everyday heroes we all know, and I honor them as well.

More than ever, it is important to remember that what makes an American servicememberis the willingness to sacrifice for others. Would that the CoC could embody that spirit even for one day. Trump tweets Memorial Day. Sad!
