Oddly enough, one can be infinitely "polite" and yet quite obnoxious.

And it works in both directions. To apply Ozzfest manners at the opera would be uselessly distressing to many, but to apply opera manners at Ozzfest would be equally uselessly distressing to oneself!

Julia, how many grand operas have you attended in a major opera house? A bad performance is ignored but a good one brings "BRAVO!" Did you mean the grand ole opera?

I think another way of looking at the opening question is: when is it ever wrong to be polite? For me, it makes the question a lot easier to answer. It's never "wrong" to be polite.
Corollary: is it ever "wrong" to be impolite?
Converse: Is it ever "right" to be rude?

Fewer than half a dozen, Sandy - I go as often as I can afford the travel & box office. I would consider opera tradition to be opera manners. Your mileage may, of course, vary.

Let me be the first then to say that, yes, it is always right to be polite. It is not always necessary but it is never wrong. In this grand opera business do the attendees simply walk out in silence if the performance doesn't meet their standards? Is there an in between or is it bravo or silence? At the grand ole opera we would applaud even a horrible performance politely.

There's an in-between, Greger - at least at the few operas I've attended.
And I've been thinking about Steve's question-in-reverse (which I actually found more difficult)
Is it ever wrong to be polite? Barring cases of emergency (I WILL interrupt your phone conversation in order to call 911!) I agree that it's never wrong to be polite. Whether rudeness is ever justified is a more difficult question; as is whether rudeness is ever more effective.
Lots to think about; thanks for the thread, whoever started it (was that you, Schlack?)
